DELAND, Fla. — A police report revealed more information on Friday about the circumstances surrounding the killing of a Volusia County restaurant manager.
Tom Walsh was killed at the Mainstreet Grill in DeLand on March 31 during a robbery after the restaurant closed.
On Thursday, James Seagraves, who police say killed Walsh, and Seagraves' pregnant girlfriend, Kayla Nemoto, upheld a suicide pact, instead of giving up to U.S. marshals during a standoff, according to the report.
The report also states that Walsh was shot in the back of the head while attempting to flee the banquet room.
In a 911 call released Friday, an employee called for help when they found Walsh dead.
"Just come in from picking up my trash and my manager is lying down and he's, I don't know, he's in a pool of blood. Please hurry, hurry, hurry, hurry!" the caller said.
According to the report, the surveillance video didn't record the crime, only the suspect's voice.
Mainstreet Grill owner Phil Martin told investigators that he listened and said the voice was similar to a past employee named James Seagraves.
He told detectives that he was terminated years ago and had a criminal history.
Detectives also talked to the father of Seagraves' girlfriend, Darren Nemoto. He said he was certain it was Seagraves and that the pair had committed crimes together in the past.
DeLand police said that's what Seagraves continued to do.
In the month after the slaying, they said he used a gun to rob at least four businesses, including a Subway on March 24, an Advanced Auto Shop on April 28, an Auto Zone on May 2 and a Burger King on May 6. The report states that the robber escaped on a black motorcycle.
Detectives questioned his girlfriend's brother, who said that Seagraves had bought a motorcycle after the Mainstreet Grill murder.
Kayla Nemoto's mother said she kicked Seagraves and her pregnant daughter out of the house.
The mother told police she heard that Kayla Nemoto and James were "throwing money around."
The report details how Seagraves and Kayla Nemoto lived during the 40 days since the slaying. It includes spending money, trips to the beach, pictures on Facebook and even Kayla Nemoto putting a "like" on the Facebook page of the Mainstreet Grill.
