Two dead, 1 injured after car crashes into tree

PORT ORANGE, Fla.,None — Two people were killed in a one-car crash in Port Orange, according to police.

The two-door KIA carrying three people crashed into a tree early Tuesday morning on Ridgewood Avenue and US-1, authorities said.

Police said there were no witnesses, and even nearby neighbor Otis Martin said he didn't hear a thing.

"I was riding by and I seen the tape, and I noticed it had to be something severe with all this tape being here, and I seen the car where it was at," said Martin.

Police said the crash killed the driver, Eric DeLeon and his passenger George Kavaliauskas.

Another passenger, Nestro Romero, went to the hospital in critical condition.

Policce said the three men are in their late 20s and they're from Lake Mary and Orlando.

Investigators spent five hours working around the heavily damaged KIA hatchback, taking measurements and pictures of the scene.

"They got the shrubbery tore up over there. It looks like a pretty devastating crash," said Martin.

Investigators said DeLeon was speeding south on Ridgewood when he hit a guardrail.

Police said DeLeon then lost control, traveled across the road, jumped the curb and then crashed head on into a palm tree.

Detectives said the crash could have happened between 3:30 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday when a passerby discovered the wrecked car.

Romero remains in critical condition at Halifax Medical Center.
