Proposed data center ban moves forward in Volusia County

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Volusia County officials said a proposed ban on large-scale data centers in unincorporated parts of the county is moving forward after its first public hearing.

The county said the Volusia County Council held the first of two required public hearings Tuesday on an ordinance that would prohibit large-scale data centers in unincorporated Volusia County.

County officials said the proposal follows concerns about water resources, infrastructure, energy demand and compatibility with surrounding communities.

According to the county, the ordinance will next go before the Planning and Land Development Regulation Commission on Oct. 15 before returning to the County Council for a second and final public hearing Oct. 20.

The county said it has not accepted new applications for large-scale data centers in unincorporated areas since Aug. 17, and that hold will remain until the council takes final action.

If approved, county officials said the ordinance would prohibit large-scale data centers throughout unincorporated Volusia County. The proposed ban would not apply to municipalities within the county.
