ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Central Florida health officials say recent protests against police brutality could have played a role in a spike in COVID-19 cases, but still say a good portion of new cases are from Memorial Day celebrations.

“Most of the responses have said, ‘Memorial Day weekend we went and partied a lot and hung out with our friends,’” Dr. Todd Husty said.

With Fourth of July inching closer, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer is asking people to “wear your masks and celebrate safely.”

“If you’re making your plans, make sure health and well-being are at the forefront,” Dyer said.

Orange County Health Officer Dr. Raul Pino said there has been “active transmission” since Memorial Day weekend.
