ORMOND BEACH, Fla. — A man who was critically injured when police say he and his wife were run over and beaten outside their business has died.
Channel 9 learned Wednesday that Roger Bradley died from his injuries. His wife, Nancy Bradley, was also seriously injured in the attack.
Police said 40-year-old Michael Hightower attacked the couple after they discovered him stealing from Daytona College, where he worked as a contractor.
Investigators said Hightower believed the Bradleys would call 911. Police said he ran over the couple with a vehicle before punching and kicking them, including multiple kicks to their heads.
The Bradleys were found badly injured outside their business.
Manny Manolas, who owns a restaurant next to the college, previously told Channel 9 that he had known the couple for more than 20 years.
“Our hearts just fell to the floor, and we just started praying,” Manolas said after learning about the attack.
According to investigators, Hightower later saw photographs of the injured couple, lowered his head and apologized.
Police said the violence continued after Hightower was taken into custody.
Hightower was taken to AdventHealth Daytona Beach for medical clearance after police used a Taser on him and he crashed his vehicle.
Investigators said Hightower was handcuffed to a hospital bed. Before a CT scan, officers moved the handcuffs to the front of his body.
Officer Austin Long told investigators that Hightower reached for his holstered gun as the officer was removing the handcuffs.
According to an arrest affidavit, Hightower partially pulled the gun from its holster and fired it during the struggle. The bullet struck Long in the leg.
Police said Hightower continued fighting with officers after the shooting.
Hightower remains jailed without bond.
