Sanford woman accused of beating child with belt over bad grades

SANFORD, Fla. — Sanford police arrested a woman accused of beating her 8-year-old child repeatedly because she didn’t approve of the child’s grades.

Yianette Rivera Cartagena allegedly used a belt with metal rings on it to hit her child eight times because the child received “plain faces” instead of “smiley faces” on a report card, according to reports.

The child suffered bruising and lacerations on the face, legs, arms and buttocks.

Rivera Cartagena was arrested Monday on child abuse charges.

She told police during questioning that she was sorry for harming the child.
