SeaWorld Orlando reopens Mako roller coaster after weeklong closure

SeaWorld Orlando ride update: Mako roller coaster reopens after closure.

ORLANDO, Fla. — SeaWorld Orlando’s Mako roller coaster has reopened after a temporary closure following a fatal incident involving a similar roller coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia.

The popular coaster resumed operations Tuesday, about a week after SeaWorld closed the attraction out of an abundance of caution following the deadly incident in Georgia.

Mako had been temporarily closed since Oct. 13, after a man died while riding Goliath at Six Flags Over Georgia.

The two roller coasters were manufactured by Swiss company Bolliger & Mabillard and share similar design characteristics, including lap-bar restraint systems.

SeaWorld Orlando previously confirmed to WFTV that Mako was taken out of service out of an abundance of caution while the investigation into the Georgia incident continued.

At the time, the park said it was working closely with its partners, including Six Flags and Bolliger & Mabillard, to stay informed about the investigation.

In an earlier statement, SeaWorld emphasized that guest and team member safety remains a top priority, noting that its safety staff and ride technicians conduct regular inspections and collaborate with ride manufacturers and other engineering and safety experts.

Mako opened in 2016 and is one of SeaWorld Orlando’s signature thrill rides. The hypercoaster stands 200 feet tall and reaches speeds of up to 73 mph.

The ride’s return means guests can once again experience the attraction following its precautionary shutdown.
