SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — A critical source of transportation for Seminole County seniors needs help.
The nonprofit Seniors Intervention Group is a group of volunteers who use their own cars to give low-income seniors rides to doctor appointments or the grocery store.
The Seniors Intervention Group in Lake Mary is the only source of transportation for many Seminole County seniors, but some can't get a ride because there's no room for their wheelchairs.
Mike Barrett still works 40 hours week driving his own car from Longwood to Lake Mary to Winter Springs to pick up his peers.
"This will be my 29th trip to pick this lady up to take her to the doctors or hospitals or neurology and etc.," Barrett said.
He said he volunteers because he knows many have no other way to get around.
Mary Garland, 81, uses the free pickup nearly twice a week.
"I don't have no way to get around. I have to depend on somebody, you know," Garland said.
The nonprofit group has been petitioning the Seminole County Board of Commissioners for $85,000 in grant money to buy a bus allowing them to pick up people who need a wheelchair.
"I can reach a lot more people if we had a bus," Barrett said.
The group is hopeful commissioners will hold a public meeting soon or that more donations come from the public to make transportation for more seniors possible.
"That would be wonderful it would really, really -- I know how they helped me, so you know other people like me they can always help," Garland said.
If you need help getting around in Seminole County, the Seniors Intervention Group may be able to help.
