VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A dog owner was arrested in Volusia County, following a joint neglect investigation by Volusia County Animal Services and the Volusia Sheriff’s Office. The case involved a dog named Tanner, who was found severely underweight and suffering from body-wide sores and infections.
The rescue began when a Volusia County animal control officer responded to a routine call regarding a stray dog and discovered Tanner in weak condition. While the officer evaluated the dog, a man approached, identified himself as the owner and admitted he could not adequately care for Tanner before surrendering ownership to Animal Services.
Tanner was immediately brought to the Volusia County Animal Shelter, where veterinary and shelter staff initiated emergency medical treatment, nutritional support and stabilization efforts.
Volusia County Animal Services Director Angela Miedema noted that Tanner remains affectionate despite his condition. “No dog should ever have to reach the state Tanner was in when he came to us,” Miedema said. “But despite how sick he was, Tanner still wants nothing more than to be close to people and feel their affection. Now he has an entire team surrounding him with the care and compassion he needs. This is what our team does — we investigate, we intervene and we advocate for animals that cannot advocate for themselves.”
Residents in unincorporated Volusia County, Oak Hill or Pierson who suspect animal cruelty or neglect can submit reports to Volusia County Animal Services online at www.volusia.gov/animalservices or by calling 386-248-1777.
Tanner is expected to make a full recovery while continuing medical care at the shelter. Shelter staff plan to make him available for adoption once he regains his health and strength.
