GROVELAND, Fla. — A sinkhole opened in a Groveland neighborhood Sunday afternoon, swallowing up portions of a driveway and a street, according to the Groveland Police Department.
The sinkhole, which has grown to 45-feet-wide and 65-feet-deep, opened near a home at Iowa and East Waldo avenues at about 1 p.m., said Sgt. Stephanie Crews, a police spokeswoman.
The sinkhole ruptured a water main, causing the opening to fill with water, Crews said.
No one was injured, and only one person was evacuated, she said.
Groveland Mayor Tim Loucks said a previous sinkhole opened at the same location 40 years ago.
Once the sinkhole has stabilized, crews will cap off the water main to restore service to water customers, Loucks said.
Engineers estimate the sinkhole will stop shifting within the next 12 to 14 hours.
Once that happens, workers will fill the hole and complete repairs to the water main.
Officials don't believe there are any other sinkholes in the area.
Residents south of State Road 50 and north of Anderson Street, and residents east of Lake Avenue and west of State Road 33 are under an indefinite boil-water alert.
Those without water may pick up bottled water from the Groveland Fire Department, which is located at 450 W. Orange Street.
