Speed limits set to jump on some central Florida toll roads

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Speed limits on some central Florida toll roads are about to go up.

The speed limit on State Road 417 and State Road 429 will increase from 65 to 70 mph.

The speed limit increase will apply to all sections of the S.R. 429, from Apopka to Interstate 4 in the Disney area.

It will also increase on S.R. 417 from Sanford  to Celebration.

When Channel 9's Racquel Asa drove S.R. 417 Friday she noticed three sections of the road where construction projects were underway.

A representative with the Central Florida Expressway Authority said officials are looking at the work zones to see if the increased speed limit is allowed while construction is taking place.

Lillian Penaloza travels the road to and from work five days a week. She doesn't agree with the idea of raising the speed limit.

"If they increase the limit, we can have more accidents I think," Penaloza said.

A report from the Central Florida Expressway Authority said engineers determined that drivers were already traveling much faster than 70 mph and they said the roads can handle the higher speeds.

"Now if they have it at 70 now they can go 75," Penaloza said.

Officials said it will cost about $45,000 to replace all the speed limit signs on the roads.

Workers will switch out the signs next weekend.
