State goes after teachers in Osceola school cheating scandal

OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. — Three teachers at an Osceola County school kept their jobs after they were accused of helping students cheat.

The incident was reported two years ago at Horizon Middle School.

School district officials said physical education teacher Michael Woodend gave students multiple-choice answers to a local test that has a significant impact on a teacher's pay and advancement.

Two more physical education teachers, Eric Rothchild and BarbaraAnn Siebert, were accused of covering up the cheating scandal by knowing about it and failing to report it to school leaders.

"If the teachers tell them everything, they won't be able to learn anything," one resident told Channel 9's Tim Barber.

All three teachers were suspended during an internal investigation, but were allowed to return to the classroom after they were given letters of reprimand and additional training.

Now the Florida Department of Education is going after them.

Siebert retired in June, just before the state's Education Practices Commission suspended her teaching certificate for two years.

If she decides to come back after that, she will be on probation for three years and will be banned from proctoring tests.

Woodend also retired this year and has a hearing scheduled for next month.

Rothchild is still teaching and is fighting his case in court.

Channel 9 attempted to contact the teachers but did not hear back from any of them.
