Steam train pleasure rides coming soon to Tavares

TAVARES, Fla.,None — The pleasure train will soon be running through Tavares for the first time in years.

The attraction is part of the city's plan to bring more people to the downtown area.

The  steam locomotive train called the Orange Blossom Cannonball was built in 1907  and the operations manager said it looks nearly identical to how it did back then.

Guests can enjoy a two-hour joy ride from downtown Tavares to Lake Jem.

The train operations manager, Neil Bagaus, said the 16-mile journey will bring visitors back to old Florida.

"Everybody will be dressed in period costumes,” said Bagaus. “The engineers will be dressed as the engineers of old. The conductors and everything."

The maiden voyage for the Orange Blossom Cannonball is set for Oct. 8.

The Orange Blossom Cannonball is known as Central Florida’s historic steam train. The train has starred in many award-winning motion pictures including, “True Grit,” “Appaloosa,” “3:10 to Yuma,” “There Will be Blood,” “Rosewood,” and “Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?,” according to the train's website.

When the train tours begin, they will only be running on Saturdays and Sundays, but the city said there are big plans to expand the attraction.
