ORLANDO, Fla. — Eyewitness News has learned some students at a Florida Technical College claim they're being recruited to join the Islamic State group.
The students claimed they were first targeted on social media by people that could have been affiliated with the Islamic State group.
The college president, David Ruggieri, told Channel 9 that three people later showed up on campus and actually started handing out Islamic State group-related literature looking for people who may be interested in a new way of life. He said they even used the name ISIS as they worked to recruit students.
The information prompted officials to hold a seminar Friday to share knowledge about terrorism and extremist groups.
The event featured law enforcement and former law enforcement officers with knowledge of terrorism and the techniques used by terrorists.
"(They were) looking for people that were essentially dissatisfied with the way things were going in the world today or just looking for some sort of idealistic idea about what they want to do," Ruggieri said.
The school said they asked the people to leave campus and notified federal authorities about the incidents. They said they have not had any problems since.
