SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. — School districts nationwide now have nearly $1 billion to buy electric buses.
Sumter County was the only district in Central Florida to make the list, taking in $1.1 million.
The Biden administration announced the grant Wednesday.
It’s all part of the Environmental Protection Agency’s “clean school bus program.”
EPA administrator Michael Regan believes the program will help reduce air pollution and improve clean energy.
“Mark my words, zero emissions school buses can be and will be the American standard,” Regan said.
The agency said this is the first installment of $5 billion in grants that will be spread out over the next five years.
