Authorities said two other people inside the room were able to safely exit and were taken into custody

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — A robbery investigation in Daytona Beach resulted in an officer-involved shooting Monday afternoon after police reported that a suspect fired at officers from inside a hotel room.

According to the Daytona Beach Police Department, officers responded to a reported robbery around 12:46 p.m. Aug. 24. Information from the victim led detectives to identify the suspect as 19-year-old Ian Sylas Garner.

Police said officers attempted to contact Garner inside a hotel room at 640 S. Ridgewood Ave., but were met with multiple rounds of gunfire from inside the room.

Three officers returned fire during the incident, according to police.

Authorities said two other people inside the room were able to safely exit and were taken into custody.

Officers established a perimeter around the room as the Daytona Beach Police Department’s SWAT Team responded. When SWAT members entered the room, they found Garner suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the head.

Garner was taken to a local hospital, where he remains alive and receiving treatment, police said.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the officer-involved shooting, while Daytona Beach police detectives continue to investigate the reported robbery and the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Police said no additional information is being released at this time because the investigation remains active.
