LAKE MARY, Fla. — The Seminole County Sheriff’s Office was investigating a break-in at a Target store in the area of Greenwood and West Lake Mary boulevards early Tuesday.

The burglary was reported just before 2:30 a.m. after six people smashed through one of the store's glass doors, deputies said.

The individuals immediately went to the electronics department, broke a display case and started taking items, sheriff's office spokeswoman Kim Cannaday said.

Investigators said they were speaking with a Target loss prevention officer, but did not release specifics on what had been stolen.

Two vehicles were identified by Target as the getaway cars, one black and the other maroon, Cannaday said.

"The maroon vehicle sped off," she said. "We attempted a traffic stop on the black vehicle (but when) it did not stop we did not pursue."

Within minutes deputies received a call that the suspect car had crashed into a tree and caught fire on Alaqua Lakes Boulevard.

A deputy was able to pull a seriously injured passenger from the burning vehicle.

"The passenger has significant injuries," Cannaday said. "He was transported to the hospital in critical condition."

The driver of the car was found hiding in the woods nearby, investigators said.

He was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, deputies said.

The store opened as usual Tuesday, except employees had to prop open the broken doors as they waited for repairs to be made.

While two of the suspected burglars are in custody, four remain on the loose.

A Target shopper who had just learned about the burglary had some advice for them.

"Turn yourselves in," Barbara Hansla said. "But they won't, will they? They won't, but they should."
