Teacher recovering after being pinned between cars at Volusia elementary school

DELTONA, Fla. — A teacher is recovering after she was pinned between two vehicles at Timbercrest Elementary School in Deltona Tuesday afternoon.

Volusia County deputies said the incident that happened shortly after 2 p.m. is under investigation.

According to investigators, teacher Wendy Scorpio, 39, was acting as a crossing guard as school was letting out for the day when the accident happened.

Deputies said Edgar Martinez, 18, was in the parent pickup loop when his vehicle lunged forward for an unknown reason, striking the vehicle in front of him and pinning Scorpio.

"The car is dented to where it hit her really hard. She fell, it broke the stick in half, the stop-sign stick in half, she couldn't really move, she said," said witness Jennifer Gonzales.

Scorpio was taken by helicopter to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach with serious abdominal and arm injuries, according to deputies.

"There was like this big crash and then somebody told me that a teacher was in the middle of it," said student Chris Oba.

Investigators are trying to determine what caused Martinez to drive forward. Neither driver was injured in the accident and charges are pending.
