Former student arrested in connection with shooting outside East River High School

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — An Volusia County 19-year-old was arrested in connection with a shooting incident outside an Orange County high school Monday.

Deputies in Volusia County arrested Mandrel Harper on an warrant following a traffic stop in a Deltona parking lot Tuesday evening.

According to investigators, Harper was the person who fired a gun in the parking lot of East River High School on Monday.

According to a district spokesperson, the gunfire happened after school dismissal and there were no injuries reported.

Harper, who was a former student at the school, was charged with attempted second-degree murder with a firearm and discharging a weapon on school property, and was booked into the Volusia County Jail.

Deputies have not said what led to the shooting, but said Harper was targeting someone when he fired shots outside the school.

Records show Harper does not have a criminal record.

Channel 9 asked the district what they are doing and if they were concerned about the incidents at schools this month, and they released the following statement:

“The district will continue to be extra vigilant, as the safety of our students and staff is always our top priority. Out of an abundance of caution, families at East River High School may see additional law enforcement on campus for the remainder of the week.”
