Teen who claimed teacher seduced him suing school district

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A teenager is suing the Volusia County school district three years after his teacher allegedly seduced him.

Attorneys for the alleged victim, who is now an adult, said it took years for him to realize he was a victim and that's why it took so long to file the lawsuit.

Stephanie Cobb went to jail in 2012 for allegedly having sex with one of her students. Investigators said they found out after Cobb called 911 anonymously, worried the boy would commit suicide because she broke up with him.

In the 911 call, Cobb confirmed the boy had a gun. She also stated he said that "he wants to end everything and he has no purpose in living."

"Somebody actually took advantage of him and at the time, when you're 16 years old, you don't really understand that and he's come to a better understanding of that over the years," attorney Mark Matovina said.

Cobb spent 2 1/2 years in prison and was released a few months ago, but she wasn't convicted of having sex with a minor. She pleaded no contest to a charge of child neglect in 2013.

The lawsuit states the school district was negligent in its supervision of Cobb and that there were signs of her inappropriate behavior before the alleged crime.

"There were signs that other teachers saw that didn't report it. There were signs that other staff members saw and didn't report it, and we think that's why the Volusia County School Board is responsible," Matovina said.

The lawsuit states that the former student is seeking damages.
