Woman, 18, found in ditch after being struck by hit-and-run driver

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — A Volusia County woman was hospitalized after police said she was injured in a hit-and-run crash while walking with three children.

Daytona Beach police said Diana Torres, 18, was walking on Kennedy Boulevard and 6th Street when she was struck by a car shortly after 7 p.m. Thursday.

Neighbors said someone found the girl in a ditch after hearing the crash.

"She had very bad trauma to the head. Part of her skull was kind of indented from the head trauma. She was bleeding really badly, so one of our other neighbors walked to her house and got her mom," said neighbor Courtnie Copeland. “She was seizing. Had foam coming out of her mouth, the whole nine yards.”

Police said the car is described as a four-dour, light-blue vehicle that should have damage to the front passenger's side, outside mirror and possibly the windshield.

A Daytona Beach police officer said many drivers in the area speed, despite the 30 mph speed limit and a sign warning drivers of children in the neighborhood.

"You got elementary kids walking from over here out there. I mean, little kids, and it's not right, something should've been done," said a neighbor, who did not want to be identified.

Residents said they weren’t surprised someone was hit.

“They have to walk in the street because they have nowhere else to walk,” the neighbor said. “I would like to see more lighting and sidewalks.”

Torres' condition has not been released. Anyone with information is asked to call police.
