SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. — Three people were hospitalized after a nearly head-on, wrong-way crash overnight Saturday on Interstate 75 in Sumter County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The collision occurred near the 327 milepost, south of State Road 91, when a southbound Toyota Tacoma traveling in the northbound lanes struck a northbound Land Rover.
The Toyota Tacoma was driven by a 22-year-old man from Ocala. The Land Rover was driven by a 57-year-old woman from Texas, who was carrying an adult male passenger also from Texas.
Both drivers suffered serious injuries in the impact and were transported to area hospitals. The male passenger in the Land Rover sustained critical injuries and was also taken to an area hospital.
State troopers said it remains unknown where the Ocala driver initially entered the northbound lanes while traveling in the wrong direction.
