Titusville officer shoots, injures loose pit bull

TITUSVILLE, Fla. — A Titusville police officer shot a dog that stormed at him in a neighborhood, police said.

According to a report, the officer was flagged down by a resident in the 1400 block of South Park Avenue about 6:40 p.m. Friday.

The resident said a pit bull had been running loose for most of the day and had been aggressive toward people.

The resident showed the officer the home he thought the dog belonged to, which had the front door open without any lights on in the house, police said.

The officer saw the dog about 20 yards from the front door and said the pit bull charged at him.

At about 10 yards, the officer opened fire and the dog was shot three times, a report said.

Officers found the animal inside the home and called Brevard County Animal Control, which took the dog in for care.

As Animal Control was leaving, a man identified as Raul Javier Garcia arrived at the residence and said he was the dog’s owner.

Police said Garcia became uncooperative when he found out his dog has been shot.

Garcia demanded his pit bull be returned to him and the dog was turned over to him to get treatment.

The pit bull's injuries appeared to be to its ear, side and rear leg.

Animal Control will investigate further into whether the dog has a county tag and rabies vaccination.
