DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — A 51-year-old Land O’ Lakes semi-truck driver was killed in a crash in Daytona Beach just before 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.
James Oberfeldt was heading southbound from the Interstate 95 off-ramp to westbound Interstate 4, but couldn’t negotiate the curve, Florida Highway Patrol troopers said.
The tractor-trailer, which was carrying pasta, struck the guardrail, crashed through the metal and flipped on its roof on the shoulder of the road.
Oberfeldt was briefly trapped inside the semi-truck and was taken to the hospital, where he died.
A hazmat crew was at the scene as chemicals leaked from the crash site.
The lanes on the ramp were closed for several hours, but all but one of the lanes reopened by 6 a.m.
Boxes from the truck spilled onto the roadway.
Troopers are still investigating the crash.
