ORLANDO, Fla. — Tropical Depression Five has formed in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico and is expected to strengthen into a tropical storm as it approaches the Texas and Louisiana coasts.
As of the 2 p.m. advisory, the system had maximum sustained winds of 35 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. It was moving west-northwest at 5 mph.
Forecasters expect the depression to strengthen into Tropical Storm Edouard soon.
The latest forecast track shows the system moving toward the upper Texas coast and southwestern Louisiana through Tuesday.
Tropical storm warnings are in effect for portions of the upper Texas coast and southwestern Louisiana.
The forecast calls for winds to increase to around 40 mph by Monday evening and reach about 45 mph Tuesday morning before the system moves inland and begins weakening.
Meanwhile, the remnants of Dolly weakened considerably Monday.
The system is no longer as organized, but meteorologists will continue to monitor the tropical wave as it moves northwest toward South Florida this week.
At this time, Central Florida is not in the forecast cone for Tropical Depression Five.
