Uber said it wants to start picking people up at Orlando International Airport as soon as July 1.
The airport is busy trying to change its policies to bring ride sharing operators in, after years of keeping them out.
The plan is to have Uber pick people up on the arrivals level, at all four corners of the terminal.
It’s the same place where a friend or family member might pick up a passenger and potentially more convenient to where the taxis go to pick up people.
Taxis have somewhat of a monopoly for people arriving at OIA without a pre-planned ride, but travelers are increasingly demanding the perceived convenience of Uber and Lyft.
"The pricing, as well. They're pretty cheap,” said traveler Shema Livingston.
Livingston said she was surprised to arrive in Orlando and learn she needed to take a taxi to get to her destination.
Uber and Lyft can bring people to the airport, but the pricier Uber Black is the only option for heading home until the airport changes its policies to comply with a new state law signed by the governor last week.
Airport director Phil Brown explained OIA has to allow Uber and Lyft access.
He said ultimately, it’s what customers want.
"There's no question, and we have Uber Select, that's been operating for a number of months. And it's been pretty popular," he said.
The change in ride options could cost the airport as much as $15 million a year.
OIA plans to take a cut of every Uber and Lyft ride leaving the airport.
It'll show up as an extra charge on the app user’s trip.
Some taxi drivers are upset.
"They take all business. So, I think it's something like a monopoly. So we're not happy about that," said taxi driver Modesto Arroyo.
It’s still unclear what the extra charge will be for the passenger.
A vote at the airport is scheduled for June 23.
