DORAL, Fla. — The U.S. military is deploying aircraft, personnel and supplies to Panama following an earthquake that struck the country Oct. 9.
U.S. Southern Command said the military support is part of a State Department-led relief operation coordinated with Panamanian authorities.
The response includes rotary-wing aircraft from Joint Task Force-Bravo, personnel from Joint Security Cooperation Group-Panama and the airlift of personnel and supplies into the country.
SOUTHCOM said the forces will help U.S. government personnel assess damage, locate injured people and deliver emergency assistance.
“Because of our deep, expanding partnership, we are already on the ground providing immediate relief to our friends,” SOUTHCOM Commander Gen. Francis L. Donovan said. “We are proud to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our friends in this time of adversity.”
Officials did not immediately provide details about the number of service members being deployed or the expected duration of the operation.
