LAKE COUNTY, Fla. — A Lake County jury could decide Tuesday whether an accused killer knew right from wrong.
Closing arguments are scheduled today in Lake County in the murder trial of Vickie Williams, who is charged in the 2022 slayings of an elderly Mount Dora couple.
The trial enters its final arguments following a lengthy period of medical testimony concerning the defendant’s psychological condition.
The trial centers on whether Williams understood the difference between right and wrong at the time of the killings.
Proceedings moved to closing arguments after two physicians provided conflicting testimony regarding her mental state before witness testimony concluded on Monday.
Two physicians provided opposing testimony on Monday regarding Williams’ mental condition.
A defense psychiatrist served as the final witness on Monday, testifying that Williams suffers from severe schizophrenia and felt she was involved in a larger event.
Prosecutors countered the psychological claims by pointing to body camera footage taken shortly before the homicides.
The footage depicts Williams’ encounters with security personnel at the Getmans’ retirement community.
The prosecution contends the video demonstrates Williams was aware of her unauthorized presence prior to fleeing in the victims’ vehicle.
According to legal analysts, insanity defenses are uncommon in court proceedings and successful outcomes for such pleas are even less frequent.
