DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Daytona Beach police said two teenagers shot and killed an 18-year-old in his car behind Campbell Middle School last month.

Daytona Beach Police Chief Craig Capri announced Friday that 17-year-old Shyheem Rainge and 16-year-old Selvina Bernard were both arrested on charges of first-degree murder for the death of Eric Gordon, 18.

Capri said Rainge was arrested in Georgia and Bernard was arrested at the juvenile detention center in Daytona Beach where she was being held on unrelated charges.

Capri announced the news with Gordon’s family by his side, calling Gordon’s death a tragedy.

“It's just a tragedy. It's not fair … but I’ll tell you what's fair is getting these street thugs off the streets,” Capri said.

Police said Gordon was found shot and slumped over the steering wheel of his 2012 Mitsubishi Galant on Nov. 23.

Officers said the car crashed through a fence and hit a wall at Campbell Middle School and had bullet holes in the driver's side door.

Capri said it will be up to the state attorney to determine if the teens are tried as adults.
