DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — On Tuesday, Bethune-Cookman University’s president, Dr. E. LaBrent Chrite, resigned.
Chrite announced his resignation to members of his cabinet during a regularly scheduled meeting.

In a statement, the board of trustees said they didn’t know about his decision and wish him and his family well in the next chapter of their lives.
BCU hired Chrite in July 2019. During that time the school’s accrediting body put it on probation and the school was $20 million in debt.

Since then, Chrite and the board have been in the process of getting the probation lifted and have reduced the debt to $8 million.
Chrite has also navigated the school through the pandemic.

The board said it will continue to keep the school going in the right direction.
No replacement has been named at this time, but they will be the school’s third president in four years.
Channel 9 reached out to Dr. Chrite and has not heard back.
