A fender-bender escalates to stabbing in self-defense

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Volusia County sheriff deputies arrested a Port St. Lucie man Wednesday night after he caused a fender-bender that escalated into a fight, which led to the victim stabbing him in self-defense.

The crash happened around 10 p.m. at the intersection of County Road 415 and State Road 44 in New Smyrna Beach.

According to Deputies, a Deltona resident was stopped at a red light when 23-year-old Javier Bolanos, crashed his Toyota Camry into the back of the victim’s car.

Both drivers pulled into a nearby Circle K parking lot, and police said, Bolanos offered the victim $1,000 for the damage to his vehicle and asked him not to involve police, stating he was in a hurry. The victim declined.

According to deputies, Bolanos became upset when the victim called law enforcement to report the crash and then attacked the victim, punching him in the face and kicking him.

Deputies said the victim fought back, pulling a out a pocket-knife and stabbing Bolanos in the ribs. The victim told Bolanos to sit down and wait for law enforcement.

Bolanos was arrested and charged with simple battery. Deputies also found 258, 2mg Xanax pills and charged Bolanos with unlawful possession of a schedule IV substance.

Bolanos was released on $3,500 bail.

The victim, who is not being identified under Marsy’s Law, was not visibly injured and declined medical treatment.
