Free sandbag site opens in Astor for Volusia and Lake counties

Free sandbags are available to Volusia County residents as the St. Johns River reaches moderate flood stages

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Volusia County residents near Astor can pick up free sandbags as the St. Johns River remains at moderate flood stage.

The self-service site is at Lake County Fire Rescue Station 10, 23023 S.R. 40 in Astor. Sand and bags are provided, but residents must bring their own shovels and fill the bags themselves.

Volusia and Lake counties coordinated the site to help residents on both sides of the river.

While high water has affected parts of the area, Volusia County officials say they have received no reports of river water entering homes.

Residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas should keep an eye on river conditions. Officials also urge residents to:

  • Avoid flooded roads and obey barricades.
  • Keep children and pets away from standing water.
  • Avoid driving through standing water, which can create wakes that push water toward nearby homes and properties.
