Man charged following crash that killed pregnant woman in Ormond Beach, police say

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. — A man is facing multiple charges in connection to the May 2019 fatal crash of a pregnant woman as she was trying to cross the street.

Officials initially responded to the intersection of W State Road 40 and Seminole Drive in reference to a crash. Upon arrival police learned that a driver, later identified as 23-year-old Justin Egatz allegedly struck a couple while they were in the crosswalk after rear-ending another vehicle.

The impact sent one of the victims into a white Chevrolet and the other into the air, landing on a nearby curb, according to a charging affidavit.

Witnesses told responding officers that Egatz remained near his vehicle 500 feet away from the scene and never attempted to render aid to the victims.

One witness said it appeared Egatz had fallen asleep behind the wheel at a different intersection after pulling alongside him before the crash and was also reported as driving erratically.

Police performed a blood draw on Egatz at the scene before releasing him. Egatz was found to be under the influence of narcotics after the test results returned in July 2019.

The name of the woman killed in the crash has not yet been released.
