VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Volusia County Beach Safety is looking for new part-time lifeguards, with several tryout opportunities scheduled in October for people hoping to join the fall recruit class.
Applicants will need to complete a series of physical fitness tests during the tryout session, including a 500-meter freestyle swim in less than 10 minutes. Passing that swim is required to move on to the recruit class.
Tryout schedule
- Oct. 3: Ormond YMCA, 8 to 11 a.m.
- Oct. 6: Daytona State College Pool, 5:30 to 7 p.m.
- Oct. 13: Daytona State College Pool, 5:30 to 7 p.m.
- Oct. 17: Port Orange YMCA, 8 to 11 a.m.
What applicants need
Applicants must be at least 16 years old by April 1, 2027.
Testing at tryouts will include:
- A 500-meter freestyle swim in under 10 minutes
- A 50-yard freestyle swim in under 30 seconds
- A half-mile run in under 3 minutes, 15 seconds

Those selected for the fall recruit class will attend training on the following dates:
- Oct. 31
- Nov. 1
- Nov. 7
- Nov. 8
- Nov. 14
- Nov. 15
- Nov. 21
- Nov. 22
- Nov. 23
