Oak Hill man arrested after overnight standoff, deputies say

Thompson allegedly attacked a man with a knife and seized his phone after a romantic dispute arose

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — An Oak Hill man accused of attacking another man with a knife and grabbing his girlfriend by the neck surrendered Thursday morning after refusing to leave his home for several hours, deputies said.

Vernon Thompson, 40, faces charges of aggravated battery, armed robbery by sudden snatching and domestic battery.

Deputies responded around 11:50 p.m. Wednesday to a reported stabbing in a shed at 394 Ward Drive. The victim’s injuries turned out to be minor, deputies said.

The victim told deputies Thompson accused him of being romantically involved with Thompson’s girlfriend before kicking him in the face, pinning him to the ground, pressing a knee against his neck and trying to stab him with a knife.

Thompson also snatched the victim’s phone before he could call law enforcement, deputies said.

During the investigation, deputies determined Thompson had grabbed his girlfriend by the neck with both hands shortly before the attack in the shed.

Thompson returned to his home on West Loop after the incident and refused to come outside for several hours. After negotiations, he surrendered around 9:30 a.m. Thursday and was taken into custody without incident.
