Strong winds and rough surf will challenge Volusia County beachgoers

Strong winds and heavy surf will affect much of Volusia County throughout the coming weekend

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Heading to the beach or riding around Biketoberfest this weekend? Strong winds and rough surf could complicate plans across Volusia County.

A cold front will bring increasing winds Saturday, Oct. 17, with gusts potentially reaching 40 to 45 mph, according to the National Weather Service in Melbourne. The strongest winds are expected along the barrier islands and during the afternoon.

Breaking waves could reach 8 to 12 feet, with dangerous rip currents creating hazardous swimming conditions.

Volusia County plans to remove beach trash cans and portable restrooms ahead of the rough surf. High tides could also temporarily close vehicle access ramps.

Beachgoers should follow lifeguards’ guidance and check the Volusia Beaches app for conditions and ramp closures.

For Biketoberfest riders, gusts could be especially troublesome on bridges and exposed roads. County officials urge motorcyclists to adjust their riding for the conditions.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible, though the heaviest rain is expected to stay south of the county.

The unsettled weather could linger into next week, with rough surf and gusty coastal winds continuing Monday and breezy conditions lasting into Tuesday.
