BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — The Florida Department of Health in Brevard County has issued an alert after West Nile virus was recently detected.
Officials said chickens have tested positive for West Nile virus during surveillance and prevention efforts with Brevard County Mosquito Control.
Health officials did not say where in Brevard County the virus was detected.
Authorities are conducting enhanced mosquito monitoring, targeted treatments and overnight spraying to reduce the risk of disease transmission.
Health officials are reminding community members to take basic precautions to avoid mosquito bites. DOH-Brevard continues to participate in statewide surveillance for mosquito-borne illnesses, including West Nile virus, Eastern equine encephalitis, St. Louis encephalitis, malaria, chikungunya and dengue.
Residents across Florida are also encouraged to report dead birds to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission through the agency’s website to help track potential virus activity.
