Winter Park considers changing name of downtown street

WINTER PARK, Fla. — Winter Park officials are considering changing the name of a major street in the downtown area.

On Monday, city commissioners will vote on whether to change Pennsylvania Avenue to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

The busy Winter Park street has two of the oldest historically black churches on it and it borders the Hannibal Square neighborhood.

Scott Whitehead has been shining shoes on Pennsylvania Avenue for years and is excited about possibly working on Dr. MLK Jr. Boulevard.

"I think it's a good idea because it's in the black community where the name will fit, because it's a historic area," explained Whitehead.

The city of Winter Park has been looking for some way to honor the civil rights leader. City commission even set up a task force to figure out a way to do it.

One of the proposals is the Pennsylvania Avenue name change. If commissioners agree on this, at least 56 businesses and homeowners would have to change their address.

Other ideas proposed by the task force include renaming Lake Island Park or the Winter Park Community Center, which just opened in November.
