WINTER PARK, Fla. — There’s a fight over feral cats at a Winter Park community.
Residents at the Winter Park Villas said their homeowner’s association plans to remove all of the feral cats living at the condo complex. But some of them told Channel 9 they’re not happy about the plan.
"It's not like 500 cats, but there's quite a few," resident Ally Hinton said.
Hinton and Edward Keezel are a few of many residents who have stepped up to feed, and help spay and neuter the feral cats, which are mixed in with residents' pets.
"Anywhere you go here, you can see bowls of food, bowls of water. It's a community that we take care of these animals," Hinton said.
The residents said the HOA board voted to round up and remove all of the cats, without input from residents.
"They just made this decision quietly, under the table, and we found out about it," Hinton said.
Hinton and Keezel started a petition about the issue that has more than 40 signatures. It asks the board to reconsider its decision.
"I didn't see that they had the authority to do that under the condo documents," Keezel said.
The complex's property manager told Eyewitness News that they have received complaints about the cats from residents, but was unaware of any vote by the HOA board.
"Hopefully we can just get this settled," Hinton said.
The HOA board is expected to meet again within the next 60 days and residents hope they can come up with a plan.
