Woman dies, man missing after canoe sinks in Ocala lake

MARION COUNTY, Fla. — Dive teams are searching for a missing man in Marion County.

Investigators said five people were in a canoe on Halfmoon Lake at the Ocala National Forest when it sank Sunday night.

"The boat was a 14-to 16-foot canoe. It took on water and sunk. Some people across the lake heard some yelling coming from this area," said Greg Workman of Florida Fish and Wildlife.

On board the canoe were two brothers, their mother and one of the men's 7 and 9-year-old daughters.

Those who heard the screams went to help in a boat; first rescuing the children, their uncle and then the grandmother.

The grandmother was transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Divers went into the water to look for the father. He has not been found. Authorities used sonar to help scan the lake bed.

The names of the victims have not been released.
"We were unable to find any personal floatation devices or life jackets in or around the area, and we believe that they didn't have any on them," Workman said.

Investigators said they were trying to determine the cause of the incident.
