TITUSVILLE, Fla. — A 20-year-old Palm Bay woman was killed in a hit-and-run crash late Sunday after another vehicle struck an alligator on Interstate 95, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash happened around 11:52 p.m. in the southbound lanes near mile marker 214 in Titusville.
Troopers said a 58-year-old man was driving a 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-350 in the center lane when he spotted an alligator in the road but could not avoid it. The front left side of the Mercedes struck the animal.
The Palm Bay woman, who was approaching in a 2004 Toyota Tacoma, swerved in an attempt to avoid the Mercedes and lost control of her pickup truck, investigators said.
The Tacoma overturned, ejecting the woman into the center lane. FHP said she was not wearing a seat belt.
An unidentified vehicle traveling south then struck the woman and left the scene, according to troopers. She was pronounced dead at the crash site.
The Mercedes driver was not injured and remained at the scene.
FHP has not released a description of the vehicle that left the scene. The investigation remains ongoing.
