LEESBURG, Fla. — Police are investigating a deadly shooting Tuesday morning after a woman allegedly tried to enter a home in Leesburg.
The Leesburg Police Department said officers responded at about 4:43 a.m. to a residence in the 1600 block of Crest Avenue after receiving a report of a woman attempting to get inside.
According to police, the homeowner told investigators he repeatedly instructed the woman to leave the property and warned her that he was armed.
Police said the woman continued trying to enter the home. The homeowner then fired a handgun through the door, breaking a window, according to investigators.
The woman subsequently reached through the broken window in an attempt to open the door from inside, police said. The homeowner fired a second shot, striking her.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Leesburg Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division is investigating the shooting and is working with the State Attorney’s Office to determine whether any criminal charges are appropriate.
Police have not released the woman’s identity or additional details about what led to the encounter.
