MERRITT ISLAND, Fla. — A woman was seriously injured Thursday when a set of tires spun off a dump truck and hit her as she was loading groceries into her car, Florida Highway Patrol troopers said.

"First time I ever seen anything like that happen, and I got to say, that was crazy," said witness Eddie Gonzalez.

Troopers said the dump truck, driven by Terry McDougal, 52,  was heading north on Courtenay Parkway and Skylark Avenue on Merritt Island at about 6 p.m. %

Sherry Woodhouse, 68, was loading groceries into her car, which was parked at Gattos Tire Store.

"I basically yelled in the shop, and I came running out with the rest of the guys in here," said Gonzalez.

Troopers said the axle and two tandem tires came off of the dump truck, and the tires hit Woodhouse.

“All of a sudden, I see this tire come flying. I mean it just came flying up, hit the curb. As soon as it hit the curb, it hit the van, as soon as it hit the van, it hit the lady. Next thing, the lady just hits the ground,” said Gonzalez.

She was taken the hospital with serious injuries.

"If she was standing any closer to where it actually made impact, she probably wouldn't be here today," said Gonzalez.

The incident remains under investigation, troopers said.
