PORT ORANGE, Fla. — A woman who police say opened fire inside the Port Orange Police Department lobby before being shot by officers has been identified.
Police identified the woman Thursday afternoon as Linda Jean Croteau. She was taken to a hospital and remains in critical condition.
The police department lobby will remain closed until Tuesday, Sept. 8, while the investigation continues.
The shooting happened around 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the department on South Clyde Morris Boulevard. Police said there is no ongoing threat to the community and all officers and employees are safe.

Police: Woman opened fire inside lobby
Port Orange Police Chief Manuel Marino said Croteau, who is in her 70s, entered the lobby armed with a gun and opened fire.
She later walked outside, where officers confronted her.
“She exits the front lobby and is confronted by our officers at the scene,” Marino said. “At that point there is an officer-involved shooting.”
Marino said three officers were involved.
Video shared with Channel 9 shows officers running toward the woman in the police department parking lot.
Witness describes shooting
Caleb Lemons, who was working across the street, told Channel 9 he watched the encounter unfold.
“I noticed a lady walking out of the police station with a pistol in her hand, but it was pointed at the ground,” Lemons said.
Lemons said he then saw the woman move toward the curb and put her hands on her head before hearing gunfire.
Channel 9 asked Marino whether Croteau had dropped the gun before officers began shooting.
“At this point, no,” Marino said. “She was still holding the firearm when she was confronted by the officers.”
No officers or police department employees were injured.
Police have not released a motive and said it is too early in the investigation to know whether the department had previous interactions with Croteau.
The investigation remains ongoing, and police said additional information will be released when available.
