Woman spots bear in Longwood ahead of protest of bear hunting in state

LONGWOOD, Fla. — A black bear was spotted in a Longwood neighborhood Sunday, and residents said bear sightings have become the norm in the area.

A woman snapped the photo near west Lake Brantley Road.

The area is about a mile away from where pet owners’ rabbits were killed by a bear.

The woman who took the picture said she didn’t see the bear getting into anyone’s property or causing damage.

She said it was nice to have her "Easter bear" running around the neighborhood.

Residents said they’ve seen a lot of bears in the area lately.

“We had a bear that actually slept behind our house for a couple of years during their hibernation time, and I've seen them in our front yard several times,” said resident Sarah Maric.

There have been no recent reports of bear attacks on humans in the area.

The bear sighting comes on the eve of a major protest planned against bear hunting in Florida.

Next week, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission will consider a proposal to allow a bear hunting season.
