Woman injured during police takedown at Universal heads to trial

ORLANDO, Fla.,None — The trial for 29-year-old Nancy Kavallierakis, who was injured during an arrest by Orlando police at Universal Studios in May is scheduled to start Thursday.

Kavallierakis’s attorney mark Conan said Orlando Police were way too aggressive and he says there is video to prove it.

“The officers almost like in tandum on cue, turn, grab her and that's when she's thrown into the red bmw and slammed to the ground,” said Conan.

Conan provided pictures of his client in the hospital after her arrest for trespassing, disorderly intoxication, and resisting arrest.  She broke her arm and her face is clearly injured.

Orlando police say the woman was insulting them and using vulgar langugage before they took her down, smashing her head and arm on a car, then pushing her to the pavement to cuff her.

“They should never have arrested her. Dropping whatever she dropped out of her hands is not a crime,” said Conan.

Conan said he hopes a six-member jury sees it the same way.  His client from Clearwater refuses to plead guilty and the state refuses to drop the charges, said Conan.  So the video will become the centerpiece of the trial.

Orlando Police have also seen the tape, but no action as been taken against the two officers, Ed Michaels and Christopher Brilliant.

“Up until that point, there was never any commication to say stand back there, put your hands behind your head,” said Conan.

Orlando police didn’t immediate comment on the case, but have publically supported the off-duty officers’ actions.
