‘Zero tolerance' for drivers who ignore stopped school buses, speed in school zones, sheriff says

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — As hundreds of buses take to the roads for the first day of school, Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings warned drivers to give them the right-of-way.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office is upping its enforcement of bus violations.

When a bus is stops to pick up students and the red stop sign is extended, it is illegal to pass it, Damings said.

Keeping children safe while walking and riding their bikes to school is also a main priority, so deputies will be cracking down on drivers speeding in school zones as well, Demings said.

“If you see one of these school buses and that red arm is out and it is stopped, we have a zero tolerance posture that we’re going to have moving forward,” he said. “If you speed through a school zone, it could be very costly for you as well.”

Speeding through a school can result in a fine of more than $1,100; passing a stopped school bus could get drivers a fine of up to $369, Demings said.
