MELBOURNE, Fla.,None — A Florida East Coast Railway train sat on the tracks late Saturday evening as Melbourne police investigators tried to figure out how a 19-year-old man was struck and killed.
"I was in my swimming pool and we heard a big thunk and the next thing I knew the train just stopped and screeched its brakes," said eyewitness Claudia Lynch.
Police said the teenager was walking on the tracks between Post Road and Parkway Drive near US 1.
Eyewitnesses said they heard the train blowing its horn before the young man was hit.
"We weren't sure what happened, we just know the train stopped and screeched and came to a complete halt", said Lynch.
This is the second time in just a few months people in this area have had to deal with a tragic incident like this one.
Melbourne residents said they've been reminded of the dangers of walking on the tracks after three girls were struck and killed in February.
"My boss just lost her granddaughter in the train accident recently, so when I heard the train it just kind of struck a nerve", said Lynch.
Late Saturday, after blocking at least one intersection on Post Road, the train started moving again.
Florida East Coast Railway has posted a number of no trespassing signs around its tracks to keep people off.
WFTV spoke with some kids who said now they pay attention to those signs.
"I'm done with that, it's sad to loose someone on the train tracks", said eyewitness Brandon Heath.
