DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — A woman who tried to sell her baby for $30,000 will only spend two years in prison. Stephanie Bigbee-Davis pleaded no contest Wednesday for her part in a plan to sell her 8-week-old baby.
Undercover agents arrested her mother in November for organizing the sale. Bigbee-Davis' plea means she won't see any extra prison time.
Bigbee-Davis, 22, was casual when she came into court Wednesday, answered questions politely, and appeared comfortable with a 2-year prison sentence for trying to sell her baby, especially since she'll serve those two years concurrently, at the same time as the two years in prison she's already serving for stealing cash from an Orlando resort.
"It doesn't really result in any extra prison time for your client," WFTV reporter Jason Allen said to Bigbee-Davis' attorney David Glasser.
"That's correct. I don't want to say what my feelings are on it. She will start serving the sentence on the day she was served the warrant in Volusia County," he said.
Prosecutors wouldn't say why they didn't seek a longer sentence for Bigbee-Davis, only that the judge could have given probation. But, they said, the facts of the case were important, and arrest reports show it was Patty Bigbee, the baby's grandmother, who arranged the sale, negotiated the price, and planned to take most of the $30,000 in cash.
Bigbee-Davis scanned the courtroom as she was being fingerprinted, as if she was looking for her mother, who wasn't there. It wasn't clear if she had any interest in restarting a relationship with the baby boy, who is still with Bigbee-Davis' half sister in Hillsborough County.
"That I can't say. I can't give you information on that," Glasser said.
The grandmother, Patty Bigbee, who's accused of setting up the baby deal, is out of jail on bail. She is set for a pre-trial hearing in March and her trial is tentatively set for April.
Patty Bigbee's boyfriend, Lawrence Works, who helped drop the baby off during the sale, is still in jail for violating his probation.
