Officers Fire Shots During Pursuit Of Suspects

PALM BAY, Fla. — Palm Bay police say officers fired several shots during a pursuit of three suspects after they fled from a traffic stop.

Officials say officers attempted to stop a suspicious vehicle that was making several u-turns and driving without headlights around 4:30 a.m near San Filippo Drive and Wyoming Drive.

The vehicle finally stopped near the intersection of Wabash Road and Weldon Street. Officers say the occupants tried to cover their faces before getting out of the car and fleeing on foot.

According to investigators, one suspect reportedly shouted he had a gun and turned towards the officers in a threatening manner.

Officers say they were forced to fire shots at the suspect in fear for their safety.

A search was set up using K-9 dogs as well as the sheriff's helicopter. Two suspects were apprehended shortly after the incident.

The third suspect, who the officers fired shots at, was later found after he was spotted by an alert officer, according to police.

No law enforcement officers or civilians were hurt during the incident. Additionally, no injuries were reported by the suspects.

All three suspects were taken to the Brevard County jail. Police say they are each being charged with loitering and prowling, and resisting arrest.

The suspect who was shot at was identified as Robert Brunson. Brunson is facing an additional charge of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.

Police have not released the names of the officers involved in the shooting, or that of the two other suspects.
